Genoa, Spinnaker, Gennaker...

On our recent crossing from Catalina we were able to fly our gennaker.

Q: What's that?

A: A sail that is the combination of a genoa and a spinnaker. It's asymmetrical, like the genoa, but larger and more colorful and flown like a symmetrical spinnaker.

This may be on the quiz next time you're on the boat.

Let's go sailing!

Avalon, Howland's Landing and Cherry Cove...someone has got to do it!

A Voyage to an Emerald Isle

The Admiral and the Capt enjoyed the colors of Spring and even got a glimpse of a bald eagle returning from Ballast Point.

Another Great Day On The Water

The Admiral and the Captain were able to cast away for the afternoon today. The Admiral performed the normal pre-departure inspection and before you knew it, we were sailing. Winds were 12-15 kts, sea was calm, it was sunny but the air still has a bite to it. Plus the Captain (hoping not to be demoted) forgot the camera, oh well...

"Life is like a box of chocolates"

A good friend calls and it turns out his father-in-law (a real captain) is here visiting from North Carolina. In the true spirit of "Let's go sailing!" we did exactly that. Two days in a row, am I lucky or what? The sky was clear, air was on the cool side but the wind was a consistent 12 knots most of the afternoon. It was, in the words so often written in this log, another great day on the water.

San Juan Jeff & The Capt Enjoy A Day On The Water

Sunny skies, 57 degree water, cool breeze, good conversation, teamwork, and a 10-12 knot wind made for a great day on the water. We were hoping to see some whales but no luck. Next time. Thanks for the bottle of menage a trois. We'll do this again.

USS Dewey

While returning from Catalina on our last trip, we crossed paths with this warship. The USS Dewey was on her way to Seal Beach to be commissioned so that she could join the Navy's active fleet. The Dewey is a one billion dollar ship and is the Navy's newest guided-missile destroyer. The Admiral got on our radio with the Dewey to make sure they saw us and they confirmed that all was well.
