THE WILD KINGDOM

The Admiral and I enjoy Avalon during the winter months because it's relatively uncrowded and it's the closest harbor on Catalina from Dana Point. This trip marked our 77th passage to this unique gem of the Channel Island chain. We hiked every day (the water is freezing) and we came across some interesting fauna we'd like to share with you.

Bird of prey, not sure which one.

Home, home, on the range.

IT'S WHALE WATCHING TIME

Today the Admiral and capt braved the gray overcast sky and cold weather to catch a glimpse of these beautiful marine mammals. We have learned that if you can find and get near one of the commercial whale watching boats, you'll see whales. And today was no exception. We saw two whales from a distance (sorry no pics) spouting several times before sounding. But the best spectacle today was the armada of private boaters, following and jockeying for position around the tour boat following the whales. I wonder what the whales were thinking?
