Avalon in the Winter

The Admiral and I were able to get away to Avalon for a
long weekend. The island is green and this spring will be
a bouquet of color. The cool weather was perfect for long
day hikes and we explored some beautiful new routes. We
even were able to photograph an island fox. Rare during
the day. A zip line is under construction in Descanso
Canyon.

The small craft advisory (red flag) was flying the morning
we left for home. It lived up to its warning. With reefed
main and genny we were greeted with 22-25 knot winds,
a 5-7 foot westerly ground swell and a 2-4 foot wind chop.
It was an "E" ticket ride for the first 3 hours. At one point
we were moving at 8.4 knots. The theoretical hull speed
is around 7.3 knots. Figure that one out. It was an
adventure we'll never forget, wow, what'a ride!

Let's go sailing!
